GLWS Internet Technical Support - FAQ

Providing your Business with tomorrow's Internet solutions today.

Creating a web page should be a learning experience for the creator. While GLWS staff can from time to time push you in the right direction by providing links to information, we cannot assist in designing a page for you (without charging for consulting time of course). There are an endless number of beginner HTML books available, and it is highly recommended that you purchase one from your local bookstore if you want to get a better understanding of HTML.

We also provide FrontPage 98 and FrontPage 2000 Support. If you have any questions concerning functionality please give us a call and we'll be more than happy to help.

There are many HTML programs available that can help beginners and novices alike generate HTML pages. A large selection of these programs are available from winfiles.com, TUCOWS, ZiffDavid Net and Microsoft.

Here is a link that can help get you started with HTML:

A few pointers when creating HTML pages for use with GLWS:

Always start out with a main default page and call it default.htm or default.asp. From within this default page you should have links to the rest of your pages, or other external links

Filenames are Case sensitive!!! For instance, DEFAULT.HTM isn't the same as default.htm. It is strongly recommended that you rename your files to all lowercase letters before and after you've uploaded them to the FTP server. You should also keep any links or pointers to html/graphics files within your document in lowercase. This will keep you from having to redo everything down the road if your move your pages, and will also help you keep things organized and consistent.
How you upload your pages will depend on which option you picked during signup.

With FrontPage it's a simple matter of Selecting your web server from a list.

  1. In FrontPage Explorer click on File in the main menu.
  2. Select the Open FrontPage Web...
  3. From the Getting Started Dialog Box click More Webs...
  4. From here type in the URL in the Select Server or Disk Location Field. i.e.: www.yourcompany.com
  5. Then click List Webs..
  6. Select your root web in the Listbox and click ok.
  7. Your now logged into your website and ready to start FrontPage Editor!

To upload your pages to a GLWS web server with FTP you will need do download a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. You can find links to FTP programs in our software section. Once you have your FTP program, you'll need to configure it to connect to the GLWS FTP Server:

Hostname: ftp.glws.net
Username: [Your login username]
Password: [Your login password]

After you've provided this information to the FTP program, hit the "Connect" button. This will connect you to the FTP server (providing that you are already dialed into GLWS). Upon logging into the FTP server, you will see files and directories appear in the right hand side of your FTP program. These files and directories are on the remote (GLWS) side. Files and directories appearing on the left hand side are on the local (YOUR) side.

On the remote server side, you will see files within your home directory. If you see a directory listed as wwwroot, you will need to change into it. If you do not see this directory, you will need to create it. Most FTP programs have a mkdir or make directory button. You will need to find this and create the directory called wwwdocs.

Once you've changed into the wwwroot directory, you are now ready to upload your html and graphic files to the server. On your local computer, change to the directory within the FTP program to where your html and graphic files are stored. Select the files (hold down your CTRL key to select multiple files), and then select Transfer (Mac users will select Put File).

After your pages have been uploaded, you can view them at your domain name or assigned ip address. If you are not sure of what either of these are please call 616-349-6203 and a support rep will assist you.

Does GLWS support or have Server Side Includes (SSI) and/or Common Gateway Interface (CGI) access?

We do support SSI and CGI; but for (ISAPI) CGI's Only, Perl Script may be a future add-on but we are currently using a much cleaner alternative (Active Server Pages) for the Windows NT Server Platform. For more information on how to use these scripts, look here.

Does GLWS support Java/JavaScript/VBScript/ActiveX?

These are all client side based scripts and/or applets, so yes, they are supported as long as your web browser supports them.

Can I have a counter, guest book, or other form on my page?

Yes, you can. For FrontPage Users this is a built in feature. For FTP users please see the previous Question/Answer regarding SSI/CGI.

I uploaded my page, but when I view it I get a message saying "You do not have permission to view / on this server!" What did I do wrong?

You need to make sure your main html page (the one you want to see first) is called default.htm or default.asp. Also, make sure that you uploaded your page's into the wwwroot directory if you are using our FTP Server. See the above section on uploading your web page's.

My graphics aren't displaying, but the filenames match the entries in the html source as far as alphabetic case is concerned.

You may need to re-upload your graphics, making sure that your FTP program is set to binary or raw data mode.
